2024 in review

My year-end review of music is available on my Songs and Objects Substack site. At the end of the post is a link to a 100-track playlist of 2024 tracks; I’ve also embedded this below.

Other recent posts on Songs and Objects include:

1. My Life at Thirty. A reflection on the anniversary of Iris DeMent’s classic album My Life.

2. I Can Feel It In My Molecules. The first of a three-post series on objects in the songs of Richard Dawson. Originally published as a podcast episode, this Substack version is, I think, more accessible, plus it’s updated. First part focuses on ‘Wooden Bag’.

3. The Quiltmaker. Part two of the RD series takes the Glass Trunk ‘Joe the Quilt-Maker’ as a prompt for thinking about memory, archives, community, ethics, folk song and quilts.

4. Nothing But Things. Final part of the RD series discusses the listing of objects as proxies for memory in ‘Nothing Important’ and ‘Museum’, and the listing of objects as critique of consumerism in ‘Fulfilment Centre’ and ‘Boxing Day Sales’.

5. The Deep Time of Song. A riff on how time gets represented in songs. The starting point for a future project.
